it's up. my quotes in the WashPost. i hesitated linking it on account of my less-than-invigorating words (the rolling stones editor's quote is GREAT), but for you i'm an open book.

off to APE. come and join us!

Rules of Valentines [to be taken with a grain of salt]

by scott "caliente" louie

1. don't take this moronic day too seriously, regardless if you're getting some or getting none. it makes you look pompous or depressing, respectively.

2. if asking a co-worker if she has a valentine and she says "yes," do NOT follow up with "what's his name?" -- because "he" might not be a "he," "he" might be a "she" (and was. again, let me reiterate, i'm a moron).

3. don't spend it locked in the basement of Masonic Auditorium (like scott, for instance). it withers the libido, dampens the spirit, and instills general overall crankiness. not unlike seeing mom and dad make out, but i digress.

4. do consider yourself lucky -- very VERY lucky -- to have a girl as marvelous as Nancy in your life. some win the lottery. i got the girl. disgusting, no? it's valentine's day for chrissakes! (whoops, did i just violate rule #1?).

hard to believe, but scott's been smiling all day long to which he attributes thusly: 1) lunch with nancy. always a sign of tables turning; 2) talking on the phone with ernie whose voice i haven't heard in literally two (!) years but DUH forgot he was at work. what a schmuck am i. he's still a stud, though; 3) the Washington Post interviewing me (me!) on Napster and the Internet in general for Friday's Style section (yay!); and 4) chatting with Giant Robot's eric nakamura. so all in all, a star-filled day.

the flip side of all this mirth and merriment is sad news of our beloved editor, rene. the cancer he's so bravely battling has resurrected itself into a new tumor and he's once again in the hospital. for the first time since his diagnosis, no one is saying any encouraging words. no talk of survival. none.

i think that speaks volumes, but i wish it didn't.

today's entries will lack pinache. sorry. too tired. too frustrated. too wanting to leave and join Phish on tour (kidding, but you get my drift). maybe a sanwich will cheer me up. or a new job.

a quick note: netscape users will be looking at a toe-up page. i'm pretty sure this has to do with its inablility (or lesser ability) to handle layers. i'll fix this tonight. try IE if you have it, and i'm really really sorry.

god...so don't want to be here right now.

fiddling around with the layout. this blog page (which used to be the index page) will be summarily broken apart into it's individual components, and each component will then get an overhaul. now, i've made this claim before, so let's just see what happens. no promises, but plans include a food page (finally!) by nancy and myself, a real links page, more API pop culture resources, and various other stunts and doodads. we're really looking to go from weekend hobby to something substantial. anything to get my mind off of work which these days depresses me to no end. really, it does. it's bringing me down.
